Zurinah Hassan was born on 13 June 1949 in Alor Setar and raised in Tikam Batu, Kedah. Her own corrected biography recalls a childhood shaped by loss, kinship and the quiet resourcefulness of village life: her father died when she was six months old, her mother continued working as a nurse, and she was cared for by her aunt and grandmother.
Learning language through sound
Before books were easily available at home, radio became an early school of language. Malay songs introduced her to the architecture of pantun; radio drama and Bangsawan di Udara opened the world of syair. Children’s radio programmes also offered one of her first routes into publication.
By 1967, she was submitting poems to adult literary pages. Her poems appeared in newspapers and magazines including Utusan Zaman, Berita Minggu, Mingguan Malaysia, Mastika, Dewan Masyarakat and Dewan Sastera. The editorial guidance she received helped turn writing from private interest into a sustained responsibility.
University and Sesayup Jalan
She entered Universiti Pulau Pinang—now Universiti Sains Malaysia—in 1971 and completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. At the university, the support of Vice-Chancellor Hamzah Sendut and novelist Shahnon Ahmad helped bring her first collection, Sesayup Jalan, into print. The volume gathered poems written between 1967 and 1973 and became a landmark in the history of Malaysian women’s poetry.
Public service, writing and return to study
After an initial postgraduate ambition did not proceed as planned, she entered public service. She spent about fifteen years in the Department of Information, serving as an information officer and later in information management. She eventually chose early retirement to give writing greater space.
Her return to university study was itself a second intellectual journey. She completed a Master’s degree at Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2001 and a PhD at the Academy of Malay Studies, Universiti Malaya, in 2008. She later served in academic and intellectual roles including Guest Writer at ATMA, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and consultant/research fellow at the Academy of Malay Studies.
Creative and scholarly range
Although best known as a poet, Zurinah Hassan’s body of work includes short stories, a young-adult novel, memoir, criticism and studies of Malay traditional poetry. Her creative writing often places the intimate and the public within the same frame: a woman’s interior life, family and labour; village and city; historical memory; social change; time, journey, harbour and departure.
Her scholarship deepens this literary world. Books on nature in modern Malay poetry and on pantun, syair, gurindam, nazam and seloka connect the living practice of poetry to long cultural traditions.
National and regional recognition
Major honours include the Putera Poetry Award in 1984, the S.E.A. Write Award in 2004 and the Sunthorn Phu Poet Laureate recognition in 2013. In October 2015 she was announced as Malaysia’s 13th National Laureate; the award was formally presented in April 2016. She was the first woman to receive the title.
Her works have reached readers through translations into English, Spanish, Russian, French and Japanese, while individual poems and stories have also appeared in Mandarin and Tamil. She has performed syair and taken part in literary activity in countries including India, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei.
